Overall concept of the Pre-War Impression we are desirous of providing for the NPS program:

We will be representing  pre-war, Federal US Regulars, permanently posted to Fort. Moultrie.  The soldiers we are representing will not appear in Campaign worn, dirty Uniforms, but in clean, well maintained regulation items.  In a perfect world, everyone participating could have the full Dress Parade Hardee Hat, Frock with Shoulder Scales, White Gloves, Model 1839 .69 Cal. Cartridge Box, etc.  But… we know that very few in our community have all of these items (or even a few of them for that matter). Yet we are still going to strive to give the Park Service, and the public who come to see us, a good, historically correct impression of what the Soldiers wore during the time frame that we are representing.  We are going to require that every one bring these items:  The magic of purchasing items you do not have:  These items can and will be required for the remaining Fort Moultrie events (2009, 2010, and the opening salvo in 2011) and any other early war Federal impression.  You will have many opportunities to use these items beyond one event.  We do not want you to shell out your hard earned money on any one-time use items.  We do not like it and neither should you!

This is the Short Version of what is required (see further below for details and the detailed list )

Mandatory For All:

Federal Frock Coat.

Early War Forage Cap (aka Type I or McDowell Cap)

Dark Blue SA Infantry Trousers.

.69 Cal Cartridge Box w/Sling.

1842 Harpers Ferry or Springfield Muskets (smoothbore preferred) with proper Bayonet

Early War/Pre-War all sewn Scabbard (two rivet styles will be accepted if no sewn scabbard is available).

Waste Belt with US Buckle (No Metal Keepers)

Smoothside Canteen with Leather Sling (must be clean and not campaign filthy)

Federal Issue Haversack

Period Correct Wool Socks

Federal Issue Bootees (Brogans)

Federal Issue White Shirt

Optional, but desired items are:

Parade Dressed Hardee Hat

Shoulder Scales (with attachment items)

White Gloves (clothe)

Schyulkill Arsenal Fatigue Blouse

Federal Issue Haversack

Federal Issue Blanket.

Mattress Ticking

Model 1853/1855 Double Bag Knapsack (early War Version)

Mess equipment (tin cup/plate/fork/knife)

Regarding the Parade Dressed Hardee Hats and other Dress parade items:

It is desired (but not required) that the NCO’s have the proper NCO Shoulder Scales, with the attachment pieces on the shoulders of their Frock Coats, White cloth parade gloves and fully dressed Hardee hats.   It would be exceptional if we could have all of the Privates also be able to form on Sunday Morning in the Parade Dress items (Dressed Hardee Hat, Gloves and Shoulder Scales) but the practicality of requiring every participant to acquire these items is limited. For those who cannot acquire the Dressed Hardee Hat, the proper Forage Cap will be allowed.  Frock Coats however are required.  While a Soldier can wear his Dressed Hardee hat without the Shoulder Scales, he cannot wear Shoulder Scales without the Dressed Hardee Hat.  While in formations, everyone MUST be in the same style hat and blouse.  Obviously, if you are in the Fatigue Blouse, you will not wear a Dressed Hardee Hat.  With the exception of forming a detail for Fatigue duty, all Formations for roll call will require the Frock Coat, weapon and accoutrements (light Marching Order).
